The Glacier Express, one of the most scenic high-altitude train journeys in the world, suffered a derailment today that resulted in the death of one passenger and injury to approximately forty others.

Train accidents in Switzerland are unusual and the country’s rail lines have historically been considered above average in safety. The Glacier Express does travel at high altitude, but runs at a relatively slow speed. As of this time, the reason for the derailment remains unknown. Rail traffic along the line has been closed as police are investigating the accident.
